| Basic Training: |
Im sure you have heard mention of the Basic Training class. Here is more information about it. It is not currently required for post officers, but it is highly recommended. The more you know about the Legion the better we can support its goals and mission.
The American Legion’s official training program for officers, members, and those who simply want to expand their knowledge of the nation’s largest veterans service organization is available online.
The American Legion Extension Institute has been rewritten, updated, streamlined and enhanced with videos, digital photos, clickable links, a historical timeline and additional features. To register and take the course, visit www.legion.org/alei (Due to high traffic volume, you may experience some delays. If you experience delays, please try again later.) The program should take less than two hours to complete. It is divided into six sections, with a quiz at the end of each one, followed by a final exam.
The sections closely follow the Legion’s Four Pillars of service. They include:
- History & Organization
- Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation
- National Security
- Americanism
- Children & Youth
- Course Conclusion
- Final Exam
You must pass the final online exam to receive your digital certificate of recognition.

You should gain a better feeling about the American Legion and a reason for all the Programs of the American Legion and what they can do for each Post needs in reaching out to your the Community and other Veterans.

| Tax Info for Small Posts: |
For small posts without a canteen and with less than $50,000 in gross annual receipts, please see the following from the IRS regarding Form 990-N (e-Postcard):
Who must file
Most small tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less can satisfy their annual reporting requirement by electronically submitting Form 990-N if they choose not to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead.
Form 990-N filing due date
Form 990-N is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. You cannot file the e-Postcard until after your tax year ends.
If your 990-N is late, the IRS will send a reminder notice to the last address we received.
While there is no penalty assessment for filing Form 990-N late, organizations that fail to file required Forms 990, 990-EZ or 990-N for three consecutive years will automatically lose their tax-exempt status. Revocation of the organization's tax-exempt status will happen on the filing due date of the third consecutively-missed year.

Form 990-N is easy to complete. You'll need only eight items of basic information about your organization.
